From its inception, the City of West Des Moines has endeavored to provide the best possible services to its citizens. It has grown from an 1893 railroad town known as Valley Junction with a population of 500 to a hub of commerce and premier living.

Throughout the year, citizens and visitors to West Des Moines can treat themselves to activities that meet every taste and lifestyle. West Des Moines offers a plethora of exciting and varied shopping options that includes Valley Junction where local shops line a history downtown street. If you’re looking for something a little more modern, the Jordan Creek Town Center features national and local brands every shopper will enjoy. West Glen Town Center combines the best of both worlds with a variety of shops, fitness centers, restaurants and loft style apartments.

If spending time outside is what you’re looking for, West Des Moines has over 1200 acres of parks and open spaces, which includes the 632 acre Raccoon River Park. The park, located in the southeast part of the city, is the "crown jewel" of West Des Moines and offers ample swimming, fishing, boating, biking and picnicking activities for visitors. Raccoon River Park is also home to the West Des Moines Soccer Club, recreational sports teams, the Raccoon River Nature Lodge and an off-leash dog park. When you want to beat the heat of summer, you can head over to the Holiday Aquatic Center or the Valley View Aquatic Center. Both facilities offer water slides, pools, a lazy river and other wet and wild activities for people of all ages.

West Des Moines is also home to a variety of events during the year. Starting in May, A-May-Zing Days is the community’s biggest celebration ever with events and activities spread across all corners of the city throughout the entire month of May like Festivale Cinco de Mayo, farmers markets, Music in the Junction, the Principal Charity Golf Classic, The Spring Art Market and others. Illumnifest is held in September and is a fall festival of lights that features paper lantern lightings, carnival rides, food, drinks and live music. The Valley Junction Farmers Market features over 100 vendors and generally runs May through the end of September/early October. Here you can enjoy music, purchase locally grown fruits and vegetables, sample area wines and enjoy delicious home baked goods.
